About Cheshire Design

Meet our resin driveway installation team

Ian introduces Cheshire Design and a recently completed Cheshire project: a wraparound resin-bound driveway and patio with hardwood decking. He explains that a correctly constructed resin surface is permeable, weed-resistant and UV-protected, with a wide choice of colours, and invites viewers to request a quotation.

What it costs

Typical prices to help you plan, with the final cost confirmed after a site survey.

Typical single driveway
Around £7,000Including VAT
Typical double driveway
£9,000 to £12,000Including VAT

What moves the price is the state of what is already there, whether it needs excavating and taking away, and the drainage. Nobody can quote you accurately from a photograph, but you should not have to guess either.

Worth knowing

For front gardens in England, impermeable paving over 5m² generally needs planning permission unless water drains to a permeable area within the property. A resin finish needs a suitable base and drainage design. Check any other restrictions that apply to your home.

Questions

Questions about resin surfacing, costs and installation.

How much does a resin driveway cost?

A typical single driveway is around £7,000 including VAT. A double driveway is usually £9,000 to £12,000 including VAT. The base condition and preparation required are what move the final price most.

Read the cost guide
Can resin bound be used for patios and paths as well as driveways?

Yes. The same smooth, bound surface can be shaped around patios, garden paths, steps and side access. The base, edging and drainage specification changes to suit the location and how the area will be used.

Explore resin patios
Can resin be laid over an existing driveway?

Sometimes. Sound tarmac or concrete may provide a suitable base if it is stable, correctly shaped and well drained. Cracked, soft or moving surfaces need repair or removal before resin is installed.

See how driveways are prepared
How long does installation take, and when can I use the surface?

The resin finish is often laid in one day once the groundwork is complete. The full programme depends on excavation and base preparation. Vehicle traffic is usually kept off for around 48 hours, subject to the weather and curing guidance given at handover.

View the installation process
How long should a resin bound surface last?

A well specified resin bound surface can last 15 to 25 years. Its lifespan depends heavily on the base, drainage, installation quality and daily use. Qualifying Cheshire Design installations include a written 15 year guarantee.

About our workmanship
Do weeds grow through resin, and how is it maintained?

A properly prepared resin surface has no open joints for established weeds to grow through. Windblown seeds can still settle in dirt at edges, so routine sweeping and occasional gentle cleaning help keep the finish clear.

Resin care and maintenance
Is resin bound slippery when wet?

The surface is textured rather than polished and is designed to provide grip in normal conditions. Like any outdoor surface, leaves, algae, moss or ice should be cleared before they create a slip risk.

See paths and walkways
Does a resin driveway need planning permission?

A correctly installed resin bound driveway is permeable, so water can drain through the surface into a suitable base. That usually avoids the front-garden planning rules applied to impermeable surfaces over five square metres, although site-specific drainage still matters.
